Frequently asked questions

Aromatherapy is a holistic healing practice that utilises natural plant extracts, typically in the form of essential oils, to enhance a person's physical, psychological, and emotional well-being. These essential oils are derived from various parts of plants, including the leaves, flowers, stems, bark, and roots.

Aromatherapy is based on the idea that the aromatic compounds found in essential oils can have therapeutic effects when inhaled or applied to the skin. These effects can include relaxation, stress reduction, improved mood, pain relief, and various other health benefits. Aromatherapists often use essential oils in massages, diffusers, bath products, and other applications to harness their potential benefits.

The practice of aromatherapy involves selecting specific essential oils or oil blends tailored to an individual's needs or desired outcomes.

Aromatherapy is not only used for its potential physical health benefits but is also appreciated for its ability to create a soothing and pleasant atmosphere, making it popular in spa settings and for personal relaxation and well-being.

Aromatherapy courses offer in-depth knowledge of essential oils and their therapeutic benefits, enabling you to pursue a rewarding career in alternative medicine or simply enhance your wellness routine.

Yes, our aromatherapy course are designed for beginners and enthusiasts with no prior experience in aromatherapy.

Our course covers essential topics such as essential oil extraction, blending techniques, therapeutic applications, and the science behind aromatherapy as well as learning to give a full body massage, applying the oil blend for your clients needs.

No specific qualifications are required. A passion for aromatherapy and a desire to learn are the only prerequisites.

The duration of aromatherapy training programs can vary. A typical program may range from 200 to 300 hours of instruction, which can be completed over several months. The ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Reflexology offered at the Cotswold Academy recommends a total of 296 Guided Learning Hours; this includes classroom attendance, online theory learning, treatment logs/case studies and assignment writing. On average, it takes students around 5-6 months to complete the required coursework after their classroom days and take their final examinations.

We recommend around 5-10 hours of home study a week to complete your case studies, theory study and assignments.

To become a certified aromatherapist, you need to enroll in an aromatherapy training program offered by an accredited college. These programs provide comprehensive training in aromatherapy essential oils, blending, client care and massage techniques as well as Anatomy and Physiology. After completing the required coursework and practical training, you can take an examination to earn your certification. At the Academy we offer ITEC Accredited Aromatherapy courses, the leading accrediting board in the UK.

Yes, there are online aromatherapy courses available, however these courses don't usually meet the criteria of a regulated qualification (Ofqual). We strongly recommend that students choose a course with in person training as this is an essential part of delivering the practical massage elements of the course effectively. We appreciate though that some theory elements can be learnt via online learning which is why we've created a blended learning approach on our ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Aromatherapy. This allows you to learn the theory content at your own pace from the comfort of your home and attend in person training days to apply this theory to the practical application of aromatherapy. The online study includes video lessons, reading materials, and assignments to ensure a comprehensive learning experience.
