What are Trigger Points?
Trigger points are hypersensitive areas in the muscle fibres. Often trigger points are caused by bad posture, over use or injury. It can be helpful to think about trigger points in terms of muscles that have been switched on for too long, the fibres become over used and begins cycle of continually breaking down then trying to repair and breaking down again. This causes the knot of built up damaged sore tissue. Trigger points can be painful and they can also cause referred pain as the trigger point is pressing on nerves. Let's take the example of trigger points in the trapezius. The person may present with rounded shoulders, they may be a cyclist, golfer or desk worker for example. They may experience localised pain in the trap where the trigger point can be felt but additionally they may also be experiencing referred pain as headaches pain behind the eyes and neck. when nerves are triggered.
How does Trigger Point Massage work?
Relieving the build up of inflamed tissue and tension in the trigger points is exceptionally effective and can have instant and lasting results. Within the space of a treatment the range of movement tests can demonstrate the effectiveness for your client.
Trigger point massage is all about locating the trigger point and working to relieve pain or referred pain. Massage encourages fresh blood to flush the area and bring oxygen to the trigger point. This in turn enables the damaged fibres to repair more effectively and encourages the muscles to relax and release the tension held and lengthen the fibres.
